Diego Simeone has hinted he will promote youth team players into Atletico Madrid’s first-team squad over the coming months.
Nicolas Gaitan and Yannick Carrasco both left the club this week, following Augusto Hernandez and Miguel Angel Moya’s exits, leaving the squad with just 17 outfield players.
“We are always monitoring the guys in the youth team,” Simeone told reporters after his side’s 4-0 win over Leganes.
“They train a lot with the first-team squad and we have seen success stories like with Lucas, Saul and Thomas, but in recent years maybe not as much as we wold like.
“However we have seen some of the players in our youth teams playing very well and rest assured, we are following them closely.
“Our squad size does not concern us, we must always think positively and all these players left are here to fight for their place, to compete.
“We are now fully focused on Sunday’s game.”
