Pique: Barca or retirement

Gerard Pique insists he would have retired from football had Barcelona not offered him a renewed contract until 2022.

The Spain international – who is set to quit the national team after this summer’s World Cup – had a previous deal due to expire in June 2019, before the latest renewal.

“Staying at the club was always natural for me,” Pique told reporters upon the renewal.

“This has always been my home and I would have no plans to move to any other club, that is the simple truth.

“The best thing about my time here has been the success and the trophies – at least one every season, and we always fight until the end.

“I want to retire at the club, it is a case of Barcelona or nothing for me – I don’t want to be anywhere else, I would not be motivated and if it were not for this club then I would retire.

“Hopefully this is not my last contract – I want to enjoy today and the happiness but there is a long way left, I hope.”

The central defender will be 35 by the time this contract expires.
