Simeone: Too early for title talk

Diego Simeone has played down talk of Atletico Madrid winning this season’s La Liga, insisting it is ‘too early’ for title talk.

A win at Espanyol on Friday night coupled with Barcelona losing at Real Madrid will cut the deficit between the league’s top two to just three points, while Diego Costa and Vitolo will become free to play for Los Rojiblancos from January.

“It is too early to talk about the title,” Simeone told an interview with Diario AS.

“Journalists want to have a headline to report on but everybody here realises the situation can chance a lot and there is such a long way to go.

“You win a few games in a row and the talk is you can win the title but this is a massive task and we can only take the situation one game at a time and work hard to improve.

“We are now facing a very difficult rival (Espanyol) in a difficult venue, their Coach is extremely talented and knows Atletico Madrid very well.”

Simeone also confirmed he was happy with Antoine Griezmann’s recent form and his attacking options.

“Yes I’m very happy with Griezmann, he is totally committed to us,” the Coach continued.

“He may not have been fully fit but he really wanted to play, that is the definition of a player who is fully dedicated to us.

“Everybody wants to see Griezmann scoring goals and that is what defines what many people think, like Vietto has played very well but no goals means he is criticised.

“Gameiro does not score a lot recently and it is criticised but Torres is an idol here, so his lack of goals is not highlighted as much.”
