Barca battle into last 16

Barcelona booked their place in the Champions League last 16 thanks to a goalless draw with Juventus on Wednesday.

Lionel Messi surprisingly started as a substitute against Juve, but the decision didn't backfire as Barca got the point they needed to qualify as group winners, in a game of few chances.

The Catalans lined up in a 4-4-2 diamond in Messi's absence as Paulinho played behind Gerard Deulofeu and Luis Suarez.

Juve, meanwhile, went with a new-look 3-4-2-1 formation, Paulo Dybala and Douglas Costa supporting Gonzalo Higuain, who scored five goals in his last four appearances.

Barca beat the Bianconeri 3-0 back in September, but their last trip to the Allianz Stadium saw their opponents win by the same scoreline in the quarter-finals of the previous campaign.

A cracking atmosphere was present in Turin, with both sides coming out the traps quickly, but neither were able to keep the ball nor assert control on the match.

Indeed, Andres Iniesta lost the ball uncharacteristically cheaply in his own half and Ivan Rakitic’s suicidal pass out to Samuel Umtiti was intercepted by Dybala, but Marc-Andre ter Stegen was equal to the forward’s shot.

Rakitic almost made amends for his mistake, however, as his free kick evaded everyone and clipped Gianluigi Buffon’s post, before Paulinho headed the rebound wide.

Dybala almost forced an opener for Juve when he rounded Barca’s defence and got to the byline, but his explosive finish from a tight angle flew just over.

Messi appeared just before the hour mark, but even his introduction failed to spark proceedings.

Nonetheless, Lucas Digne should’ve at least tested Buffon in behind, the Frenchman instead trying to find Suarez with an angled through ball, which was cleared off the line.

Juve picked up the pace in the final 10 minutes, aware of Sporting CP’s 3-0 victory over Olympiakos, but Douglas Costa could only shoot half-a-yard wide and Ter Stegen managed to turn a Dybala potshot around the post.
