Former Barcelona captain Xavi Hernandez will end his playing career at the end of the campaign and intends to begin a coaching role.
The 37-year-old has been playing for Qatari club Al Sadd since ending his two-decade long stint at the Camp Nou – where he had a glittering career including winning four Champions League titles – in 2015.
“This will be my last season as a footballer,” Xavi told Diario Sport.
“I have had the plan of gaining my coaching license when I retire to allow me to continue in the game and being a Coach.
“I’ve noticed there has been a decline in my fitness and after games I am now feeling more tired and my recovery time is increasing.
“I have enjoyed a lot of luck in my career by avoiding injury but after many wonderful years I believe it is now coming to an end.”
Xavi won a total of 31 titles across his career for both Barca and Spain – whom he helped to three major international titles.
