Iglesias “proud’ of ‘brave’ Pique

Prominent Spanish politician Pablo Iglesias has voiced his support for Gerard Pique after the defender’s comments regarding the Catalan referendum.

Iglesias is leader of left-wing party Podemos and stated that he is ‘proud’ of the 30-year-old defender and that whilst he was not a Barcelona fan, to make his comments and play with the national side was ‘brave’.

“I am not a Barcelona fan nor am I Catalan, but I am proud to see Pique’s actions,” Iglesias wrote on his Twitter account on Tuesday.

“He has put on a brave face and defends his ideas, with the national team shirt.”

Pique had called Sunday ‘the worst experience of my career’ after playing in an empty Camp Nou for the Blaugrana and said he would willingly retire from Spanish international duty if he was not wanted.
