‘Barca’s La Liga future uncertain’

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has admitted the club’s future in La Liga would not be guaranteed should Catalonia become an independent state.

The North Eastern region held an independence referendum on Sunday which was declared illegal by the Spanish government, with questions being raised over the future of the area’s football clubs.

La Liga president Javier Tebas has previously claimed the clubs would not be allowed entrance into the Spanish league structures under current rules, although sides from Andorra are currently in the pyramid.

“Should a unilateral declaration of independence take place then the board of directors would have to meet and analyse what we could and could not do,” Bartomeu told a press conference on Monday.

“Because in the end the board of directors represent the Barca affiliates – they are the legitimate owners of the club.

“Pique? He wants to continue to play for the national team and the Coach is calling on him to do so also, the player has clarified this many times of his desire to play and to win.

“He likes to play for both his club team and the national team for whom he is available for selection.”
