Pep: Messi’s buyout clause could be met

Lionel Messi’s €300m buyout clause at Barcelona could be triggered, according to his former manager Pep Guardiola.

The current Manchester City Coach, who was speaking after his side’s 1-1 draw with Everton on Monday night, made the comments which will only add to growing uncertainty surrounding the Argentine’s future.

“I don't know…someone might if they have the money and want to spend it,” Guardiola told his post-match press conference.

“It might happen, who knows?”

Sensational reports in France over the weekend suggested City themselves could pay such a clause with Foot01 and Yahoo France saying the Barca star was their ‘absolute priority’.

Messi agreed a new contract with Barca last month but did so before Neymar’s shock transfer to Paris Saint-Germain and has yet to physically put pen to paper, with his current deal expiring in June next year.
