New Atleti deal for ‘very happy’ Saul

Atletico Madrid have announced that midfielder Saul Niguez has signed a new contract, which will tie him to the club until 2026.

Saul’s previous deal still had four more years to run, but reported interest from Barcelona has seemingly prompted Atleti to review the starlet’s terms.

“I’m very happy because we’re a family at Atleti and there’s no better place I can be,” he told the club’s official website.

“I’ll work to the maximum, like I always have, to repay the club’s confidence in me on the pitch.

“I want to thank all my teammates and coaching staff for their daily support in helping me become the player I am today.”

Saul joined Atleti’s academy from Real Madrid in 2007 and debuted with their B team in 2011, aged just 16.

A year later, he debuted for the first team in a Europa League match against Besiktas, and spent the 2013-14 campaign on loan at then-La Liga side Rayo Vallecano.

He emerged as a regular in Diego Simeone’s side the following season and has since gone from strength to strength, despite being troubled by a bladder problem.

The 22-year-old also scoried five goals for Spain at the European Under-21 Championship last month to win the tournament’s Golden Boot.
