‘Could Ronaldo ever join Bayern…?’

Bayern Munich chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has been asked if he could see Cristiano Ronaldo quitting Real Madrid for the German club.

Rummenigge, a forward for Bayern, Inter and the Germany national team in his playing days, spoke to AS to preview the Champions League Quarter-Final between his employers and Los Blancos, and was asked who in the Madrid side impresses him.

“Taking statistics into account, then Ronaldo. If you score so many goals year after year and you get the Balon d’Or on four occasions it’s not a coincidence,” Rummenigge argued.

“In addition, he’s gained a lot of sympathy in Germany. We always considered him a great player but he seemed to be a curious character. All that changed in Euro 2016, when he posed for a selfie and became the Coach in the Final after he was injured. I found him to be a great guy.

“Gerd Muller was no different, he was between heaven and hell. Heaven, when he scored one to three goals. Hell, when he didn’t score in three games. This type of player, who usually scores in every game, is like that, but I’m sure Madrid know what they have in Cristiano.

“Could he join Bayern? There are players who are from a club. [Lionel] Messi is from Barcelona, Muller from Bayern and Cristiano from Madrid. He could play wherever he wanted, but where he is right now is where he should be.

“Like Robert Lewandowski at Bayern? Ha! I’ve nothing to add…”
