Araujo leaves for AEK on loan

Las Palmas have confirmed Sergio Araujo has left the club for the remainder of the season to join Greek side AEK Athens on loan until the end of the season.

The Argentine striker was told he would be allowed to leave the club ‘to turn his life around’ by boss Quique Setien following his second drink-driving offence in a matter of months.

The 24-year-old was given a nine-month suspended prison sentence and banned from driving for two years in November after being found guilty of drink-driving, but was arrested last week for reportedly drink-driving again.

Araujo began his career with Boca Juniors but made only 19 appearances for his boyhood club, having loan spells at Barcelona B and Tigres before a season-long move to Estadio Gran Canaria in 2014-15, where his 23 goals helped them win promotion back to the top flight of Spanish football for the first time in thirteen years.

AEK Athens are coached by former Sevilla and Zaragoza boss Manuel Jimenez and currently lie in sixth position in the Greek league.

This season, Araujo has featured in eleven La Liga games, scoring twice.
