Lionel Messi will reportedly sign his new Barcelona contract once the summer holidays are over after his father and agent Jorge approved its terms.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barca have switched their attentions to Messi after finally sorting Neymar’s new deal and plan to give the No 10 a pay rise.
The Catalans are thought to have told Jorge Messi that they wanted to negotiate his son’s renewal before Copa America and their tax-fraud trial.
Barca are also planning to extend the contracts of Ivan Rakitic and Luis Suarez, but the club’s policy is to prioritise talks with players whose deals have two years left to run.
This can also be seen in the case of Javier Mascherano, technical secretary Robert Fernandez having reportedly reached an agreement in principle with the Argentine last month.
La Blaugrana’s “dream” is for Messi to inaugurate the new Camp Nou in 2021, and the paperwork is said to already be in place for the 29-year-old to sign once he reports for preseason.
