‘Messi campaign not helpful’

Barcelona’s campaign in support of Lionel Messi has been decried as harmful to improving attitudes to paying tax in Spain.

Messi was given a 21-month jail term for avoiding €4m in tax on image rights and the sentence led to Barca launching a #WeAreAllMessi campaign on social media, but Carlos Cruzado, of the union which represents employees of the tax office, has complained about the message being sent.

“We understand the campaign of solidarity with him, that has been developed recently by Barcelona, in solidarity with someone who has defrauded the tax office, is not something that will improve the fiscal conscience of Spaniards,” Cruzado told Cadena SER, AS reports.
