Ramos: Barca rivalry no issue

Sergio Ramos insists there has never been an issue in the Spain camp, despite the heavy presence of Real Madrid and Barcelona players in the squad.

The Clasicos between 2010 and 2013, which coincided with Jose Mourinho’s time in charge of Madrid, proved to be heated affairs, to the extent that there were reports of division in the Spain squad at Euro 2012, but Ramos refuted such claims as he looked forward to the France finals.

“[The David de Gea] was a story that wasn’t pleasant. When it affects a teammate in the national team, he has the entire support of the group,” the defender said at a Press conference ahead of La Roja’s Group D opener against Czech Republic on Monday.

“I spoke to him the other day about everything. We really want to have a good tournament.

“[On a new era for Spain], there’s no need to emphasise the difference between other eras.

“We had good players in the past and we have a good-enough group now as well.

“We’ve lived through a good period of success, and the idea is to keep it going.

“We’ve lived through beautiful and bad moments. Sometimes we do not value you can also lose.

“I ask the fans to support us and that, regardless of what happens, we’ll give everything to do our best and leave with our heads held high.

“[On Barcelona and Madrid players linking up], we do so with enthusiasm and fuse together. We all have the same goal, the country unites us and we’ll try to do as best we can.

“After all the controversy [from past Clasicos], we don’t have to be any more united because we’ve always been a great group.

“There’s always been a good atmosphere and we all have the same objectives.”
