Josep Maria Bartomeu has claimed that Barcelona’s rivals “are chasing us because they’re behind us” as the club aim for League triumphs in five sports.
Bartomeu was speaking the 50th anniversary of the Pena Barcelonista d’Onda fanclub on Saturday, and he took the opportunity to boast his football team’s successes, which has seen them win seven trophies in the last two seasons.
“The season isn’t over. We’re on the verge of another historic moment because we’ve already won the League in football, handball and hockey, and we can still win it the basketball and futsal, so it would be the first time in our history that we won five Leagues,” he began.
“We’ve had a good time since [winning] the League in 2004-05, the first [title] of Ronaldinho; historic moments, but also economic and social ones.
“In these 11 years, we’ve had some very good moments, but the FC Barcelona, win or lose, have feelings deep inside.
“These 50 years of Pena Barcelonista d’Onda show that we’ve kept this feeling, even when we’ve lost.
“Our motto behind the double was ‘s’ha demonstrat, s’ha demonstrat’ [we’ll show them, we’ll show them].
“This slogan must always be carried deep inside. We’ve shown to have a style of play, an idea of football and we have the best player in the world.
“We must always convey it and be very proud of this team. We have very good expectations.
“We’re doing so well in both winning trophies and also on a social and economic level. Our rivals are chasing us because they’re behind us.
“They want to chase us and do well because they have potential. We can’t relax, so it’s time to do more.
“We’ve won 28 trophies since 2005 and we continue doing just as well.”
