Cholo: I only care about winning

Diego Simeone ‘only cares about winning’ and tells Atletico Madrid that completing the Champions League semi-final ‘depends on mental strength.’

Atletico lead 1-0 from the first leg as they go to Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena, Saul Niguez’s wonder-goal giving Simeone’s side the victory at Vicente Calderon.

“In the first leg, we were comfortable in the first half, with the pressure and the transition, also with the intensity. In the second half Bayern were more like themselves. [The second leg] depends on mental strength,” he said at a Press conference, AS reports, before offering a reply to Xavi Hernandez’s recent criticism of the team’s style.

“Our idea is to win, which is the one everyone has. I have no shame in saying I’m nervous for every game. I don’t stop to analyse things. I only care about winning. I prepare for that, not to please anyone else. I work for my club. They’re the ones who pay me.

“I’m respectful of everyone’s opinions. We all have our reasons [for the way we play]. My interpretation is that I have to empower the players I have. I will only choose when I’m with a national team. We can’t impose our ideas at a club. We will remain faithful to our style.”
