Pique: Red? First wasn’t yellow!

Gerard Pique insists he was right not to be sent off for handball in Barcelona’s 2-2 draw with Villarreal on Sunday as “the first one wasn’t a booking”.

Pique appeared to stop Denis Suarez from bypassing him in an advanced position by controlling the ball with his hand after he threw himself into a challenge, despite already being on a yellow card, but the centre-back leapt to his own defence by criticising the decision to book him in the first instance.

“My first [handball] wasn’t one because the ball hit my chest,” he said after the game.

“The second one did hit my hand, but I couldn’t do anything about it, so if the first one wasn’t a booking then you can argue about the second.

“We threw away a game that we had in our hands, but we now have a lead of nine points, so I think the draw is a positive result.”
