Newcastle in Benitez contact?

Reports from England say Newcastle have made contact with representatives of Rafa Benitez over replacing Steve McClaren.

Former England manager McClaren is said to be on the brink of the sack after a 3-1 home defeat by Bournemouth and the Guardian adds ex-Real Madrid Coach Benitez has been approached by directors of the Premier League club.

There is also interest in Brendan Rodgers, previously of Liverpool, and David Moyes, most recently on the Real Sociedad bench.

Benitez, or whoever replaces McClaren if the axe does indeed fall, will be given more freedom at the club than the current incumbent, who is a Coach.

It’s felt Benitez could get a reaction from the Newcastle squad, but there’s a question mark as to whether or not he, or indeed Rodgers or Moyes, would be willing to work in the Championship.
