Diego Simeone feels the Atletico Madrid fans can be proud of their team after victory over Real Madrid.
Antoine Griezmann settled the tie in Atletico’s favour and moved his side four points clear of Los Blancos after 26 rounds of the League campaign.
“We have a very definite identity. It’s true in recent games we lacked goals but the team had a similar intention as to today,” Simeone said, AS reports.
“We scored the goal, and had chances for more. It’s a game we prepared a lot for, worked a lot for. We pressed high, with brilliant effort from Griezmann and [Fernando] Torres.
“It’s good for Antoine to score again. Was it the game I imagined? Yes, it was at Santiago Bernabeu at four in the afternoon [local time], with an important team, with good players on the other side.
“It’s especially good because we played two days ago and the team’s response is tremendous. Atletico fans can be proud of their players.
“I expected we’d suffer but it settled down after 20 minutes and the intensity was fairly continuous. But I think what most defines us as a team is the game today.
“The lungs on the field, tremendous. Great heart from Saul [Niguez], Fernando, to chase impossible balls. That led us to take a chance and resolve the game in the best way, with a beautiful goal that brought victory.
“How is it winning at the Bernabeu? We take it naturally, having the chance to win here.”
