Real Madrid President Florentino Perez has demanded “hard work, effort and sacrifice” from his players in a rallying cry for the second half of the season.
Perez hosted a ceremony on Friday to commemorate the Madrid members who had fulfilled 25, 50 and 60 years at the club, in which he also announced that legendary attacker Francisco Gento would be named honorary President.
“Real Madrid are synonymous with hard work, effort and sacrifice,” he began.
“A year ago, we came to be world champions and win the Champions League and it showed that we had good players.
“We have to trust the players. We’ve not achieved what we aspire to regularly enough.
“We mustn’t give up because we have to keep working.
“Complacency isn’t in our vocabulary. The unit is the most important thing to make progress and become stronger.
“The unit is strategic, to defend who we are. We’ve achieved stability, which allows us to aspire to everything, and the members contribute to that.
“We’re independent [from everyone else]. Real Madrid boast strength, and we’re going to leave our souls [on the pitch].
“For me, being President of Real Madrid is the pinnacle. The members contribute to that stability.
“We remain solely responsible for the club. Real Madrid will be what the members want them to be.”
