Diego Simeone praised his Atletico Madrid players’ consistency after the win over Benfica that guaranteed top spot in Champions League Group C.
Atleti took a 2-1 win from the Estadio da Luz to beat Benfica to top spot and, in theory, a more comfortable draw in the tournament’s next round.
“The boys are putting in an extraordinary effort. It’s not easy to win and win and win, we want to follow this dynamic, of winning non-stop,” Simeone said, AS reports.
“We played an important game against a rival that plays well. It’s an important victory for what’s ahead.”
Saul Niguez opened the scoring at the end of a slick team move and Cholo discussed the midfielder’s role before touching on what it means to top the group.
“We knew we could have depth on the left. [Antoine] Griezmann helps [Luciano] Vietto and Saul has that timing, effort and goal,” the Coach remarked.
“It’s a beautiful goal and broke the monotony which, until then, the game was in.
“As we said before, nothing is assured. We had to wait, we had to do something and we did it. Fate put us here. We have to be prepared to compete.”
