‘Atletico growing in confidence’

Antoine Griezmann believes Atletico Madrid are becoming more and more confident as they face a pivotal final Champions League group game against Benfica.

The winners of the match in Lisbon will top Group C and receive a potentially-easier draw in the first knockout round, with Benfica and Atleti level on points going into the contest.

“It was a difficult game at Vicente Calderon. They have top players who can create danger at any time or on the counter-attack,” Griezmann said, Marca reports, referencing Benfica’s 2-1 win in Madrid.

“We’ll have to be vigilant and try to win because there is a lot at stake. [The Atleti squad] knows each other better than in the first game and with recent results we’re growing in confidence.

“We’re very strong in defence and getting a goal against us is complicated, so let’s hope.

“We want to win every game and get as high as possible. We also want to win because we want to be first in the group.”

Griezmann is expected to spearhead the Atletico attack at the Estadio da Luz, the sight of Atleti’s defeat to Real Madrid in the 2014 Champions League final, and the France international discussed his strike partners and their lack of goals.

“I feel good playing with anyone. I always try to combine with them and play in a way that will produce goals,” he said.

“All our forwards are goal scorers. Everyone has a run. I feel good and confident and I try to do my best for the team.”
