Kahn defends Ter Stegen

Former Germany international Oliver Kahn has come to the defence of Barcelona’s Marc-Andre Ter Stegen after he was beaten from range against Roma.

Alessandro Florenzi scored from almost the half-way line in the 1-1 draw, catching Ter Stegen out of his goal, but Kahn doesn’t feel his compatriot was at fault.

“If you’re asking me if it was a mistake of the goalkeeper, I don’t think so,” Sport quotes Kahn telling German television.

“Playing high up is part of his game and it’s what is expected of goalkeepers now. That has its advantages, to cut out attacking moves, but also has its risks and you have to accept them.

“In my day the only goalkeeper who played like that was Jens Lehmann, so he attracted attention. Now it’s a style that has been imposed.”
