Enrique wants ‘rock-solid’ defence

Luis Enrique was happy with Barcelona’s display in the Joan Gamper Trophy win over Roma, citing a defensive improvement from other friendly outings.

Goals from Neymar, Ivan Rakitic and Lionel Messi delivered the match to La Blaugrana as Camp Nou held a fiesta prior to the start of the season, but Enrique was focused on events on the pitch.

“In defensive situations close to the penalty area, where we have struggled the most, we were much better,” he noted, Marca reports.

“But in other aspects, such as defending away from goal, I was already happy. The improvement has been in the possibilities of crosses, although there haven’t been many.

“You can’t be eligible to win titles if you’re not rocks in defence.”

Enrique elaborated on where he sees Barca’s level as the season draws closer, explaining how it’s acceptable not to be at their very best.

“We’re far from 100%, but that’s the same for all teams now. In general we’re on a normal trajectory, as expected at this point,” he continued, later confirming Jordi Alba would miss the UEFA Super Cup through injury.

“All the players have been at a very good level. This is the trajectory we’ve been looking for.

“I think the start of last season was more difficult than this. The players have to adapt and I think in this second season there are more facilities. Of course, the goals are even greater.”
