Modric ‘sure’ Ramos wants to stay

Luka Modric believes Sergio Ramos wants to stay at Real Madrid, although the midfielder hasn’t asked him personally.

Modric appeared at a Press conference in Australia and the defender, reportedly keen to leave for Manchester United, was among the topics of conversation.

“I hope Sergio stays because he is very important, he’s our captain, a leader on and off the pitch,” the Croatia international began, AS reports.

“He’s happy. I think he is going to stay and he’s the best defender in the world. I don’t have to ask him to stay, he wants to, I’m sure.”

Modric was also asked for his impressions of new Coach Rafa Benitez, who was sitting next to him as he spoke, and the team’s objectives for the summer.

“We are excited for the new campaign. We’re working very well and very hard,” he revealed.

“I think we’ll have a lot of success this season. Sometimes players don’t like tactical work but it is important on the pitch. It can help you in difficult times. I don’t have a problem with it.

“The sensations are good, we feel good. Training is fun and we like that. We’re feeling good in these two weeks. Rafa hasn’t surprised me. It’s the first time I’ve met him. Hopefully we’ll have a good relationship and a good season.

“Last season was tough. I had two serious injuries and want to forget it, to do my job well and undisturbed. I feel important and I will give everything for the trust the Coach gives me. I want to play at my best to help the team.

“We want to improve with every game and to show the ideas of the Coach as quickly as possible. Results aren’t important in pre-season. We want to improve. If we win, that’s better. We’re working well, twice a day, it’s hard, but that’s pre-season. Training is fun and always with the ball.

“I hope to play at the same level as before, and better. I always want to improve. I talk a lot with the Coach and want to know my position in defence and attack. Hopefully I’m getting better.”
