Cesc: Media triggered Pique boos

Cesc Fabregas believes the media were partly to blame for the boos directed towards Gerard Pique in Spain’s 2-1 victory over Costa Rica on Thursday.

The defender was subjected to widespread jeers from disgruntled fans in Leon – a Real Madrid stranglehold – following his comments about Cristiano Ronaldo’s 30th birthday party at Barcelona’s recent treble celebrations.

“Gerard’s a funny guy. He has a peculiar personality and a very open character. He hasn’t been affected by [the boos],” the Chelsea midfielder said at a Press conference ahead of Spain’s Euro 2016 against Belarus on Sunday.

“Everyone has feelings. Surely he knows why it happened, but he’s a strong kid.

“I don’t want to argue whether something is right or wrong as everyone is responsible for their own actions.

“I’m happy for my friends at Barca. Of course, I’d have been thrilled to win the treble. I saw all of their games last season.

“I can imagine myself winning a treble with one drink too many in an open-top bus parade. These things happen.

“At the end of the day, the media is a very powerful speaker and people listen to it.

“If [the media] had spoken about Pique for only one day, I don’t think [the booing] would have happened.”
