Alves: Messi asked me to stay

Dani Alves has revealed Lionel Messi was among those who tried to convince him to remain at Barcelona, arguing he’d never have it so good anywhere else.

Alves on Tuesday signed a new two-year contract with the Catalans, shortly before his existing deal was due to expire.

The right-back had previously criticised the club for their handling of negotiations but, speaking at a Press conference on Wednesday, explained why he had chosen to remain at Camp Nou.

“As I said in the treble celebrations and on many occasions, I only go to places I feel loved. I hesitated for a few moments but the other day it was clear people want me,” he said, AS reports.

“That was one of the reasons I decided to stay. In my life I follow my heart, right or wrong. I followed my heart, I had a lot to offer this club. There is plenty of work ahead with the best teammates in the world.

“I’ve never seen a group with such a connection, such a good understanding, and whether you like it or not that’s part of making a decision. There are a number of factors.

“Messi said: ‘Dani, stay. Where are you going that’s better than here?’ Long ago we said we had a good life at this club. There are things in this city that meet all our needs. A year ago when it was said they wanted Leo and not me, we spoke and said nothing will be better than here.”
