Ronaldo: Football needs more stars

Former Barcelona and Real Madrid striker Ronaldo has claimed that, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar aside, football needs more “world stars”.

The trio are considered the three best players in the world at the moment, with the Madrid winger successfully defending his Ballon d’Or crown last January, but the Brazil great believes the modern game lacks the personalities of its predecessors.

“Like [Zinedine] Zidane said, I think Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar are all incredible, but world football’s devoid of stars,” he told Brazilian weekly Istoe.

“[Zidane] is my friend and we talked a lot about football [on Sunday]. He’s a Coach nowadays, but [management] is something I don’t want [to pursue] at all.

“[On possibly returning to football with Fort Lauderdale], I’d love to but I don’t know if I can. I feel muscle pains when I play.

“I stopped playing because of a groin injury. It was the worst pain I felt in my life and lost [my career] because of it.”
