‘Madrid have wasted the first half’

Emilio Butragueno lamented Real Madrid’s failure to capitalise on their strong first half against Atletico Madrid.

The Champions League quarter-final first leg ended goalless but Los Blancos were on top in the opening 45 minutes.

“We had a brilliant first half but didn’t get the result we wanted. [Jan] Oblak was great,” Butragueno said, AS reports.

“The second half was more balanced and we had to work harder to create chances. We’ve wasted a good opportunity because we didn’t capitalise on the first 45 minutes.

“The referee? We don’t talk about referees in games as intense as this.

“We came with the idea to score and win but now we’ll play in our stadium and the support of our fans will be fundamental.

“We’re at home and we have to win. We’re the champions and we have to defend our trophy.”
