Gerard Pique has leapt to the defence of Cristiano Ronaldo following his gesture in Real Madrid’s 2-0 win against Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday.
The Portuguese was wrongly booked for diving as it emerged that he fell under the challenge of Antonio Amaya in the box, leaving him to gesticulate in the referee’s direction moments later.
“It’s not the first time that Cristiano [Ronaldo] has made that gesture and was never punished for it before, so I don’t think he should be sanctioned now,” the Barcelona defender said at a promotional event on Thursday.
“He thinks and acts in the same way. However, we’re focused on our own work and not his problems.
“It’s impossible to win a trophy in April but we can still trip up before then. I don’t believe [Barcelona and Real Madrid] will win every [last] game.
“Last year, we dropped many points at the end of the season, but the most important thing for us is that we continue depending on ourselves [this time out].”
