Cholo welcomes Griezmann goals

Diego Simeone spoke of his happiness at seeing Antoine Griezmann maintain his scoring touch in Atletico Madrid’s win over Real Sociedad.

Griezmann added to a Mikel Gonzalez own goal for his second goal in as many games following Saturday’s win over Cordoba, the France international having previously gone five games without finding the back of the net.

“Griezmann was very good. He’s returned to scoring, which is what we need from him, and he worked as the team needs,” Simeone said, AS reports.

“We’re delighted he’s back to scoring and hopefully he continues this upward trend. He’s got a lot ahead of him. He’s only young.”

Simeone was also asked about the contribution of Fernando Torres, as well as Atletico’s recent results, clean sheet record and rivals for third place.

“Torres looks good to me. He’s working as the team needs. He continuously forces defenders and gives a lot of freedom to Griezmann, because the attention is on him,” he argued.

“Being strong defensively has been our structure for years. It’s a credit to the whole group, not only the defence.

“In the second half it was better to keep the ball. Possession. Regarding recent performances, the team found the goal and we could keep the ball.

“This year there has been good consistency. Sevilla winning means third place is going to be very complicated.

“Now Valencia have to win in Bilbao. Each game is a final and nothing will be decided until the end.”
