Simeone issues Cavani ultimatum?

Diego Simeone has reportedly told Atletico Madrid’s board that he will only extend his contract with the club if they sign Edinson Cavani.

According to L’Equipe, Diego Godin will act as a mediator in any deal and has already notified his countryman of Los Colchoneros’ interest, to which the Paris Saint-Germain striker greeted warmly.

The French daily adds Simeone has identified Cavani to be the player which keeps Atleti a major European force and acts as the perfect foil for Antoine Griezmann and Fernando Torres.

However, having joined PSG from Napoli for €64m in the summer of 2013 – the most expensive transfer in French football history – and currently earning €10m a year, Cavani will not come cheap.

Consequently, L’Equipe claims Atleti will consider letting a number of first-team regulars leave in order to accommodate the 29-year-old, including Mario Mandzukic, Arda Turan and Koke.
