‘Villarreal win a little short’

Marcelino has conceded that Villarreal should have beaten Red Bull Salzburg by a greater margin in the Europa League on Thursday.

The Yellow Submarine took control of their last-32 tie courtesy of a 2-1 victory in the first leg, but Jonathan Soriano’s penalty shortly after the restart earned the Austrians a significant away goal.

“We won, which was what we wanted,” the Coach said after the game.

“We didn’t want to concede a goal but we lacked a bit of confidence to win the game by a larger margin.

“Nonetheless, I’m extremely satisfied with the work we did against a good opponent. It’s a good result but a little short.

“We deserved a better result, but bar that I’m very satisfied and happy. The match went as we expected.

“[Villarreal and Salzburg] are two teams, who are quite similar. They have a similar way of playing to us, pressing and playing high up the pitch, and combined very well in final third.

"They pressure you in all areas of the pitch and never retreat. I honestly saw no other option than play like we did [on Thursday].

"Red Bull play every game like that, never retreating, pressing high and doubling up. When you ride that pressure, you become presented with clear chances.”
