Capello criticises Madrid ethos

Fabio Capello has criticised Real Madrid for continually placing too much emphasis on style over substance.

Los Blancos have become renowned for their pursuit of the world’s best forwards, and the Italian, who led the club to two Primera titles in 1997 and 2007 but left on both occasions following murmurs that his style of play was considered dull, claims his former side are still top-heavy.

“The quality of Madrid’s players are superior to Barcelona’s and all the other teams,” he told Onda Cero.

“However, Barca are playing as a team [again]. Previously, they played like individuals.

“The problem is that in Madrid, it’s thought that you can only do great things by having good strikers.

“When [their attackers] stop producing, Madrid need players with personality and quality. They need Pepe and [Sergio] Ramos back.

“At the end of last year, Madrid started games 1-0 up because of Cristiano [Ronaldo].”
