‘Elche taught Villarreal a lesson’

Marcelino admitted he was ‘hurt’ by Villarreal’s 2-2 draw with Elche on Saturday but demanded his side to learn from their failure to defend a lead.

Early goals from Luciano Vietto and Ikechukwu Uche appeared to have earned the Yellow Submarine an eighth straight win until Jonathas and Victor Rodriguez rescued the Valencians an unlikely point, resulting in a missed opportunity for the visitors.

“After going 2-0 up, we lost our defensive intensity. We gave away more chances than we usually do in our matches,” the Coach said after the match.

"We tried to regain the victory, even in the final minutes, but they weren’t clear chances.

“When you're leading 2-0 you win 90 percent of the time, so the failure to secure all three points hurts. It’s a lesson learned.

"We can’t afford to lower the intensity and give so many chances away.”
