Diego Simeone has no problem if Atletico Madrid continue to score goals through set-pieces but welcomed more goals from open play.
Cholo was speaking at a Press conference to preview the Madrid derby with Getafe, who are coached by Simeone’s old Atletico teammate Cosmin Contra.
Simeone praised Contra as well as reflecting on the champions’ commanding midweek win over Malmo.
“Getafe are working better, becoming a better team. They’re working very well,” he said, AS reports.
“Contra was a colleague and he has a character that infects the players. They’ve shown significant things this season and will continue to do so.
“Football is very broad and all I can say is I don’t dislike it when we score from set-pieces.
“It’s a tool of football but it’s also welcome if we try to score from open play. We try to be strong in everything.
“One of our strongest tools is set-pieces. Beyond how we work on them, we have good takers and good headers of the ball.”
Most of the five goals put past Malmo in the Champions League were though from open play and Simeone reflected on the make-up of his team.
“The characteristics of the players is what makes the game more or less direct,” he continued.
“We had a good first half against Malmo and a very good second, with more people getting in the penalty area and more possibilities for goals.
“Mario Mandzukic reads the game differently to his teammates and that gives us other possibilities.”
