Deulofeu willing to work for place

Gerard Deulofeu accepts he has to work hard to win a regular place in the Sevilla side during his loan from Barcelona.

Deulofeu moved to Ramon Sanchez Pizjaun at the start of the season, having spent last year with Everton in the Premier League.

The winger has been interviewed by Marca and discussed his time with Los Rojiblancos and the Toffees, as well as international aspirations with the Spain Under-21s.

“I’ve gained experience gradually. You learn from all your teammates [with the Under-21s],” he said.

“There are very good players here, like Isco and Iker Muniain. Muniain is twice a European champion and Isco once. Let’s see if we can do it again.

“I’m still the same person but I learn from day to day and try to do the best.”

La Rojita play Serbia in the second leg of the playoff for a place at next year’s European Under-21 Championships, the first leg ending goalless.

The pitch in Serbia was far from perfect and Deulofeu feels the conditions were a factor in the result, but argued it was still a decent outcome ahead of Tuesday’s second leg.

“The pitch did make it very complicated. It was typical against a very hard, very strong rival, who know how we always want to play,” he added.

“With the pitch that bad we couldn’t play out game. But I don’t think we should think about it so much. It was a good result because those are the games where you can concede and lose. And now everything rests on the home game.”

Deulofeu has featured sporadically for Sevilla but said he isn’t concerned, rather focused on proving he deserves a place in Unai Emery’s thinking.

“I have to work. That’s the daily bread. If you don’t play, you have to work to earn it,” he admitted.

“I think I’ve done well when I have played. We’ll see if I can gradually force my way into the team. It’s difficult because there’s a lot of competition, but I’m getting there slowly.”
