Gabi: Atleti are like Robin Hood

Atletico Madrid captain Gabi has described his team as being the Robin Hood of the Spanish League.

In an exclusive interview with GQ magazine, the 31-year-old gave a surprising take on last year’s La Liga title success, when Los Rojiblancos pipped the big two of Barcelona and Real Madrid to the crown.

“Atletico are like the people’s Robin Hood. We broke up a League of two that was already boring,” he declared, whilst also recalling the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in Lisbon.

“To lose the final of the Champions League is the cruellest thing that has happened to me in football. Not because it was unfair or unjust, but the minute in which we lost it.”

The former Real Zaragoza player, now in his second spell at the Vicente Calderon, also spoke about his future at the club.

“Right now, with all that it’s taken me to get here, I’m not going to be leaving Atleti.

“There are some players who have received very significant offers but preferred to stay with a sporting powerhouse rather than an economic one,” he added.
