The discrepancy between Barcelona and Dani Alves’ views of the player’s contract has been settled in the favour of the club.
Marca reports that Alves was under the impression his contract ran until 2016 whereas Barca – and sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta – insisted it was up in 2015.
It’s been concluded that Alves turned down the offer of an extra year when his deal was renewed in 2011 as Barca wanted the Brazil international to take a pay-cut for the final 12 months.
Alves earns €11m a year and Barca anticipated that the final season of his contract would see a reduction in his playing time, hence the desire to lower his wages.
As it stands, this will be Alves’ final year at Camp Nou and he will be free to leave next summer.
