Cesc praises Spain newcomers

Cesc Fabregas has said the young players around the Spain squad will eventually thrive, but they need time to do so.

La Roja’s first post-Brazil game ended in a 1-0 defeat to France but Cesc told reporters after the final whistle that the former world champions started the game well.

He conceded they didn’t maintain the level of performance as the game went on but predicted Spain would return to winning ways in the near future, with the help of a new batch of players.

“I think we had our moments. From being on the pitch in the first half we were good, solid, we controlled the game, pressing them together. The feeling was good,” he said, according to AS.

“It broke down a bit in the second half but overall we’re starting something new, different things, and the symptoms are good.

“There are young players, kicking up from below, but we’re not going to find solutions in a game or two.

“What matters is the feeling and as a group, if we’re committed, everything will be fine. They are good kids.”

It was put to Cesc that Spain are moving away from the style dubbed tiki-taka that delivered two European Championships and the World Cup, the former Barcelona midfielder replying that time will tell.

“We’ll see. You don’t draw conclusions from one game. In the second half it cost us to pick up the pace,” he continued.

“Football changes, varies, maybe these players don’t need as much possession. Football is attacking. We do and we know what is at stake. Everything will be fine.

“France started a project a couple of years ago. They’re growing.

“They didn’t seem superior in anything on the pitch. There was absolute equality.”
