Alonso explains Spain criticism

Xabi Alonso has tried to explain what he meant when describing Spain as ‘lacking hunger’ after their defeat to Chile.

The Roja midfielder was scathing following the defeat to the South American’s earlier this week, which saw the world champion’s crash out of the World Cup at the group stages.

But the Real Madrid man has spoken again to clarify his statements.

“I think some people only need a small statement or excuse to have a debate,” he told El Larguero.

“We don’t have a clear conscience, but the feeling that as a group we weren’t in the right place and that we lacked tension.

“Lack of hunger, no, we were committed and keen to do well, but that’s sport. We had a great run, which made history and now, after this defeat, things will change.

“It’s a human question, we’ve had a lot of success but staying at that level is very tough. We need to cope with this painful defeat as well as we can.”

Alonso was then asked about his own future with the national team.

“I’m looking to the Australia game to finish as well as possible. I still haven’t thought about going on. I haven’t decided.”
