Xabi Alonso is understood to have raised the ire of his Spain teammates with his comments after the defeat to Chile.
The Real Madrid midfielder said Spain were not mentally prepared for the World Cup and suggested the squad had lost its hunger as the holders bowed out of the tournament at the group stage.
Marca reports that the rest of the squad feel Alonso should have made it clear he wasn’t speaking on behalf of the group and was rather putting forth his own opinion.
Andres Iniesta and Diego Costa are said to have led the complaints to Alonso, with Iniesta publically contradicting the former Liverpool man.
There was little conversation between Alonso and his teammates at the training session that followed, the report adds, with the players who haven’t gotten much game time particularly upset by his criticism.
They are said to feel they were desperate to play but never got the opportunity – and likewise the players who didn’t even make the squad.
Alonso’s international career could be coming to a close, Marca suggest, with Monday’s game against Australia potentially his last for his country.
