Madrid ‘expect Alonso to quit Spain’

Real Madrid believe Xabi Alonso will step away from the Spain team after the World Cup in order to extend his club career.

Marca claim that the sentiment was behind the decision earlier in 2014 to award Alonso a two-year contract. Alonso turns 33 in November and the belief is that if he quits La Roja, he will travel less and play fewer games, allowing the midfielder to rest more.

Alonso hasn’t commented on the speculation and may not have totally made up his mind, but Carlo Ancelotti is said to be among those who feel the former Liverpool man will call time on his international career once Spain’s involvement in the World Cup is at an end.

Alvaro Arbeloa has already retired from international football after he was left out of the World Cup squad and Alonso could follow in his close friend’s decision. He made his Spain debut in 2003 and has thus far amassed 109 caps.
