Costa ‘thrilled’ at World Cup call

Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa has revealed his delight at being named in Spain’s World Cup squad.

Costa’s place was confirmed when the squad was revealed yesterday, the Brazil-born forward included despite currently carrying a hamstring injury.

It’s unknown if Costa will be ready for Spain’s first game, on June 13 against the Netherlands, but the player has told Marca that he is hopeful of featuring in the June 7 friendly against El Salvador.

“The truth is I’m very happy. It’s a happy day for me,” Costa said.

“I am thrilled to go to the World Cup in Brazil with Spain. I am very happy.

“I’m very well. I’ve been working with physios and rehabilitation trainers and I feel great.

“Starting tomorrow I will work with the team under Vicente Del Bosque.

“I hope to have a few minutes next week in the game against El Salvador in Washington.”

Costa added that La Roja are going to Brazil with the intention of defending the trophy.

“We go to win, of course. We will fight for it,” he said.

The interview ended with Costa asked for his thoughts on the Champions League final.

“Real Madrid were lucky,” he replied with a laugh.
