Ramos ‘hopes for Ballon d’Or’

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has admitted he would love to win the Ballon d’Or but values team awards over individual prizes.

Ramos was speaking after being presented with the Medal of the City of Seville prior to Spain’s friendly win over Bolivia in the city last night.

Marca reports Ramos as revealing this season has been one of his favourites, having won the Champions League with Real Madrid.

He now wants to carry on the success with Spain at the World Cup, and welcomed the prospect of succeeding Cristiano Ronaldo for the Golden Ball.

“It’s been my best. I’ve had a great year on a professional and personal level,” Ramos said.

“Hopefully it stays that way in the World Cup in Brazil. The entire Spain team has to give the last drop of sweat,” he added.

“Hopefully I can win the Ballon d’Or, but I don’t expect it.

“Individual titles are achieved by the whole team. La Decima is Sergio Ramos, is everyone.

“There are many people who worked for that trophy. It’s been a great year for all Madridistas.”

Ramos also became a father for the first time during 2013-14 and believes the responsibility of having a son has been a factor.

“It’s the most important moment of my life and the truth is, I love it,” he admitted.

“I am very happy with being a father and it has been a great season.

“They are things that are added to you and make you grow.”

Both Pepe and Alberto Moreno have backed Ramos to be a future captain of club and country, but the former Sevilla defender insists he is happy to defer to other leaders.

“Today there are other captains who must be respected and everyone has their role in the team,” he continued.

“When it comes to me I will be happy to be the captain but for now we must respect Iker [Casillas] and Xavi [Hernandez], and all who are in front of me.”
