Pique signs new Barca deal

Gerard Pique has agreed a new contract with Barcelona to run until 2019, it has been confirmed.

Pique signed the agreement with Barca President Josep Maria Bartomeu, sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta and Vice-president Jordi Mestre all present, Marca reports.

“Barca must be on top, winning titles and feeling important within the European and global elite,” Pique said.

“With the team and the Coach we have all the ingredients to get back on top.

“I’m very excited [about the appointment of Luis Enrique]. During his presentation he showed he has very clear ideas.

“He knows the club and I think he will give a lot.”

Pique added that his new deal means he is more likely to spend the rest of his career at Camp Nou.

“I’m closer to retiring at Barca,” he said.

“Now I hope for many more successes, as many as I’ve had in these last few years.”

Bartomeu and Zubizarreta also welcomed the renewal of the defender.

“It’s very important to consolidate Pique as it means the best centre-back in the world stays here. He’s a key player,” the President said.

“He’s our reference point,” Zubi added.
