Costa in danger of missing World Cup

Diego Costa will almost certainly miss the Champions League final, and is in danger of sitting out the World Cup too.

The Atletico Madrid forward pulled up after only 15 minutes in their 1-1 draw with Barcelona at the weekend.

The club will determine the full extent of the injury later on Monday, but there is pessimism from the Spanish Federation, who believe that the goalscorer has in fact pulled his hamstring.

If that is the case, then it is unlikely that he will be fit in time for La Roja’s first match of the tournament on June 13 against Netherlands.

AS report that Vicente del Bosque doesn’t want to risk taking any players who will be unavailable for that game with the Dutch, so could leave Costa at home.

The paper quotes an unnamed member of the national team’s coaching staff, who insists: “We have to wait for the report from the medical staff, but it doesn’t look good.

“The problem is more serious because it’s a recurrence of an injury in an area that had already been damaged. We have to wait, but we also have to have an alternative plan.”
