Villarreal fined for banana throw

Villarreal have been fined just €12,000 following the banana-throwing incident two weekends ago.

A supporter was seen throwing the fruit at Barcelona’s Dani Alves during their 2-2 on April 27.

And after the club found the fan and banned him for life, the League’s Competition Committee have confirmed this afternoon that they have seen fit to hand the Yellow Submarine a fine of €12,000.

The Madrigal outfit had feared a heavier punishment, but the Committee have opted instead for a financial, rather than a sporting penalty.

The incident has since become an internet sensation, with players all over Europe getting behind Alves, posting photos of them eating banana with the hashtag: #weareallmonkeys.
