Alves: Nothing changes in Spain

Dani Alves has lamented that nothing has changed regarding racism during his long career in Spanish football.

The Barcelona defender had a banana thrown at him as he was preparing to take a corner during Sunday’s win over Villarreal.

Alves picked up the banana and ate part of it, telling reports after the final whistle that there’s no choice but to make a mockery out of his abusers.

“You have to take it because nothing will change,” Mundo Deportivo reports Alves as saying.

“I’ve been in this country for 11 years and everything’s the same as it was long ago. We should be laughing at these retards.”

The match was Barcelona’s first after the death of Tito Vilanova and Alves added that the former Coach’s battle against throat cancer was an inspiration to the players.

“There wasn’t a happy ending but it was a demonstration that we must fight to the end, and if at the end you can’t win the battle, you’ll know you tried until the end,” he continued.

“We played too well for all the setbacks we’ve had. We’re human and to play football you have to be at 200%.

“It’s no excuse, it just that it takes a lot out of you.”
