Zubi: Barca won’t surrender

Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta has insisted the Catalans will fight to retain the title until the very last moment.

According to AS, Zubi predicted Barca wouldn’t give up on the League, despite falling four points behind Atletico Madrid this weekend, and likewise that he wouldn’t walk away from his position.

He also offered the latest information on Lionel Messi’s contract.

“We will fight for the League until the last minute of the last game. I firmly believe we are a fighting team and we won’t surrender,” the former goalkeeper told Spanish TV.

“In football victory has many fathers. When you lose you happen to not get much sleep.

“From the point of view of results this is the worst I’ve experienced as sporting director but no one can accuse me. I’ll go when I haven’t worked out.”

Zubi was asked about potential transfers, despite FIFA preventing Barca from making signings for the next two transfer windows.

He replied that the players Barca currently have in their squad have been the basis of all the success in recent years.

“We won the Champions League at Wembley with Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano,” Zubi argued.

“[In Neymar] we have incorporated the player everyone wanted. We have a balanced and competitive squad.”

The subject of the Coach, Tata Martino, was brought up, and Zubi was bullish over the Argentine’s future.

“He said he will fulfil his contract, and that means he will fulfil his contract,” he said.

Zubi also revealed Pique could be fit for Wednesday’s Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid.

“I don’t rule him out yet. Gerard’s eyes say he wants to be in the Cup final but his body doesn’t yet,” he admitted.
